Bueng Nong Khot / บึงหนองโคตร

Water, community and outdoor life in Ban Ped.
สายน้ำ ชุมชน และชีวิตกลางแจ้งในบ้านเป็ด

Hello Khon Kaen Editorial Team · 5 November 2026 / 5 พฤศจิกายน 2569

What does “bueng” mean?

Bueng (บึง) is a Thai word for a large body of standing water that holds water throughout the year. It is also used in standard Thai, rather than being exclusive to Isan. Nong (หนอง), a word found in Isan place names, refers to a pool or waterlogged low-lying area. Keeping “Bueng Nong Khot” as the place name helps preserve that local geography.

From a low-lying field to a community lake

Ban Ped Municipality's development strategy records the area's earlier name as Thung Nong Khot: low-lying land that received rainwater from Mo Din Daeng. Local people used its water and caught aquatic animals for food. The document dates the building of an embankment to around 1918, during the administration of district chief Luang Ratchathurakit.

A lake woven into daily life

The same municipal account describes later development for recreation, exercise and local traditional events. This makes the lake a useful starting point for understanding Ban Ped through both its water landscape and community life.

Water management today

In March 2026, the municipality reported a smart sluice-gate project undertaken with Khon Kaen University. It monitors water levels and supports gate control to improve water management and flood prevention.
