Bueng Kaen Nakhon:
The Lake at the Heart of Khon Kaen

More than a scenic park, this historic body of water connects the city's beginnings with the rhythms of everyday life today.

At sunrise, joggers trace the lakeside path. By late afternoon, families gather, friends meet and the water reflects the changing city skyline. Bueng Kaen Nakhon is not simply a landmark to photograph: it is part of Khon Kaen's daily life.

A lake older than the modern city

Bueng Kaen Nakhon is a natural lake in Nai Mueang, in the heart of Khon Kaen. Official environmental records note that it was formerly known as Bueng Chim or Bueng Bon. Its roughly 603 rai (about 96 hectares) of water and surrounding landscape have long shaped this part of the city.

The lake is closely associated with the settlement from which Khon Kaen developed. Historical accounts describe Thao Phia Mueang Phaen and families establishing a community around Ban Bueng Bon in the late eighteenth century. Today, a monument honouring the city's founder stands near the northern side of the lake.

From historic waters to a public gathering place

As Khon Kaen expanded into a major regional centre, the lake remained a shared space. Paths, trees, exercise areas, sculptures and public gathering spots have made its shores a place where people of different ages and backgrounds spend time together.

That continuity is what makes the lake special. The setting has changed, but the relationship between water, community and city life remains visible.

“To understand Khon Kaen, spend an evening by the lake. You will see the city not as a visitor attraction, but as a place people call home.” — Hello Khon Kaen editorial reflection
