A Khon Kaen Story of Coffee, Family and Gratitude

Some cafés begin with a business plan. Tibbetts Coffee House began with a marriage, a shared dream, and gratitude to family.

Founded by Thanapatra Kerdmanee and his wife, Tibbetts Coffee House has been part of Khon Kaen’s evolving coffee culture since 2014. Behind its espresso, homemade bakery and peaceful garden setting is a deeply personal story about family, gratitude and a couple who chose Khon Kaen as the place to build both their business and their life together.

When Thanapatra and his wife were newly married, they did not yet have an established career or business that could support them. So they began looking at the things they genuinely enjoyed and the opportunities that might be possible.

For Thanapatra, coffee became a serious interest after visiting Gallery Drip Coffee at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre. That experience opened up an entirely new world of coffee for him.

His wife, meanwhile, had already dreamed of opening a café. She loved the atmosphere of coffee shops — places where people could step away from work, study and the pressures of everyday life.

Their shared interest in coffee and café culture eventually became Tibbetts Coffee House.

A Name That Carries a Family Story

The name “Tibbetts” is deeply personal.

It is the surname of Thanapatra’s American stepfather, who lent the couple money when they were starting the business.

They asked permission to use his surname as the name of the café — partly for good fortune, but more importantly as an expression of gratitude and a permanent reminder of the support that helped them begin.

The café’s logo carries another family story.

It features a Bangkaew dog, inspired by Thanapatra’s mother’s beloved pet. In fact, his mother originally purchased the land where Tibbetts now stands because she wanted her dog to have enough space to run and play.

The couple therefore chose the dog for the logo so that both parents would, in their own way, always be part of the café.

“For us, Tibbetts Coffee House represents our gratitude to both our father and our mother.”

The name and logo are therefore more than branding. They are part of the family history behind the business.

More Than Coffee — A Place to Pause

Walk into Tibbetts and the philosophy becomes easier to understand.

The experience begins before reaching the coffee bar. White flowers welcome visitors near the entrance, while mature trees and greenery surround the café.

The intention is deliberate.

Thanapatra and his wife want customers to slow down, take a deep breath and temporarily leave the pressures of the outside world behind.

“What we genuinely want to give our customers is a moment to rest — whether from work, study or whatever is happening in their lives.”

Inside, the experience changes from the scent of plants and greenery to the aroma of coffee and freshly baked pastries.

The couple remain actively involved behind the bar, preparing coffee and looking after customers themselves.

They want Tibbetts to feel less like visiting a commercial coffee shop and more like going to a friend’s home for coffee and something homemade to eat.

Espresso at the Heart of Tibbetts

Ask the couple for Tibbetts’ signature drink and the answer is slightly unexpected.

There isn’t one.

They believe coffee drinkers have different tastes, and they do not want a single menu item to define what good coffee should mean to everyone.

But if one coffee best represents Tibbetts, it would be Italian Espresso.

The café has a strong respect for Italian espresso culture — from the coffee itself to the cup, serving temperature and intensity of flavour.

Tibbetts serves espresso in both traditional and modern Italian styles.

“Whatever coffee you make, the foundation should always begin with a good espresso.”

That philosophy also influences the café’s choice of coffee roasters, particularly those that share the same appreciation for Italian espresso culture.

Homemade Means Something Here

Coffee is only half of the experience.

The bakery began with Thanapatra’s wife wanting to serve pastries she had made herself.

Making them in-house allows her to control the ingredients and quality while keeping prices approachable for customers.

There is also a conscious simplicity to the presentation.

The pastries are not intended to be excessively decorated or elaborate. Instead, they reflect the same philosophy as the café itself: simple, comfortable and welcoming.

The idea is to make something with the same care you would use when preparing food for your own family.

Watching Khon Kaen’s Coffee Culture Change

Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the Tibbetts story is that the café has been operating long enough to witness a major transformation in how Khon Kaen drinks coffee.

The owners describe that evolution in three periods.

2014–2016 — The Early Specialty Coffee Years

When Tibbetts opened, specialty coffee shops in Khon Kaen were still relatively uncommon.

Milk-based coffee dominated sales, and many customers’ expectations were shaped by major Thai and international coffee chains.

2016–2019 — The Third-Wave Coffee Era

Then Khon Kaen’s coffee drinkers became more adventurous.

Interest in specialty coffee increased. More customers began drinking black coffee, asking about higher-grade beans and becoming willing to pay more for quality.

Tibbetts was among the early cafés in Khon Kaen offering drip coffee and specialty coffee.

The café began sourcing coffees from roasters across Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia, regularly rotating selections so local customers could experience coffees from around the world.

That practice continues today.

2019–Present — Quality Meets Everyday Life

Following the COVID period, Khon Kaen’s café landscape changed again.

The number of cafés increased significantly, while health-conscious lifestyles began influencing customer choices.

Black coffee remained popular, while customers drinking milk-based coffee increasingly began asking for alternatives such as oat milk and almond milk.

But another change was taking place.

Rather than continually seeking increasingly specialised or expensive coffee, many customers began looking for something more practical: good-quality coffee at a price that fits everyday life.

Location also became increasingly important.

With more cafés available across a growing city, people began choosing places near their homes, workplaces or destinations they already visit.

In many ways, the evolution of Tibbetts reflects the evolution of Khon Kaen itself.

Why Khon Kaen?

For Thanapatra and his wife, Khon Kaen is more than the location of their business.

It is home.

Thanapatra grew up, studied and eventually started his business here. His wife originally came to Khon Kaen to study at Khon Kaen University. After graduation, they married and decided to build their life in the city together.

They believe Khon Kaen still has considerable room to grow.

Its transportation connections, employment opportunities and role as a regional centre continue to attract people from surrounding provinces — not only to work, but increasingly to establish businesses of their own.

But economic opportunity is only part of what keeps them here.

Khon Kaen offers major medical facilities, education at every level, public parks, places to exercise, temples, restaurants, cafés and access to both urban and natural attractions.

For people prepared to build something of their own, they believe the city offers opportunity.

For people simply looking for somewhere to live well, it offers something equally important: quality of life.

A Café Built on Gratitude

It would be easy to describe Tibbetts as another specialty coffee shop.

But that would miss much of its story.

A father’s surname became its name. A mother’s beloved dog became its logo. A piece of land originally intended to give that dog somewhere to run became the place where a young couple built their future.

Coffee became their craft. Homemade bakery became an expression of hospitality. And Khon Kaen became home.

More than ten years later, Tibbetts Coffee House remains part of a city whose coffee culture it has watched grow and change around it.

It is not simply a café in Khon Kaen. It is a small piece of Khon Kaen’s story.
